Sexual and Reproductive Health Choices

Everyone’s primary concern is that babies are born as healthy as possible and are able to maintain that good health throughout their childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

The Institute continues to provide information in the area of sexual and reproductive health by exploring creative and effective methods of reaching people with preventive health information. To share this information the following goals have been established by the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute:

  • Provide preconception health information to people before they are contemplating pregnancy.
  • Provide preconception health information to people before they are planning a pregnancy.
  • Understand the number of adolescent pregnancies and outcomes for mothers and infants in Saskatchewan on an annual basis.
  • Provide parents with resources to allow them to have meaningful discussions with their children about issues including sexual and reproductive health.

SEX? - A Healthy Sexuality Resource - Booklet

This booklet is a non-judgmental presentation of facts developed to help young people make informed decisions about relationships and sex and includes such topics as: decision making, sexual assault, sexually transmitted infections, and contraception.

The booklet was developed by a working group made up of staff of the Nova Scotia Office of Health Promotion and Protection and departments of Health and Education, District Public Health Services and a plain language writer.

Other contributing members of the working group included youth representatives and community partners. More than 500 youth were consulted to find out what they wanted and needed to know and to review a draft of the resource. The resource was reviewed by parents and teachers in rural and urban areas throughout the province. The resource was also reviewed by national and provincial experts in the field of sexual health and sex education.
