Preterm Prelabour Rupture of Membrances (pPROM)

Preterm Prelabour Ruputure of Membranes (pPROM) is when your water breaks before your due date. The earlier this happens in your pregnancy the more serious it is.

pPROM may cause you to deliver your baby before your baby is ready to be born. This may cause your baby to have problems related to prematurity (baby born too early) such as: breathing problems, infection, nutrition/feeding problems, cerebral palsy and death.

pPROM will feel different for everyone. You may feel some of these symptoms:

  • A sudden gush of fluid coming from your vagina
  • A constant wet feeling in your vagina
  • Feeling like you are unable to stop urinating (peeing)
  • Constant leaking of fluid from your vagina

If you feel any of the symptoms listed above, go to the hospital right away. When you get to the hospital, it is important to let your doctor or nurse know if you have had any contractions (tightening of stomach muscles), a fever or vaginal bleeding.
