Pre-Existing Diabetes and Pregnancy

Good blood sugar (glycemic) control is extremely important before and during your pregnancy. Women with poorly controlled diabetes are at an increased risk of having a baby who has problems with their heart, spine, brain, urinary tract and/or genitals. Good glycemic control before pregnancy can lower the risk of your child having these conditions to the same risk as seen in non-diabetic pregnancies.

If any of these symptoms occur, contact your health care provider right away.

  • High or low blood sugar levels
  • High HbA1c levels
  • Positive urine ketones
  • Symptoms of a bladder infection such as needing to pee a lot or pain or burning when peeing
  • Unable to eat due to nausea or vomiting
  • A decrease in the baby’s movements
