High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) in Pregnancy

High blood pressure (hypertension) in pregnancy can cause problems for you and your baby. Problems happens because high blood pressure can damage blood vessel walls and affect the flow of blood between the mother and her baby.

In addition to high blood pressure during pregnancy, some women also have protein in their urine (proteinuria). Hypertension with proteinuria can be a very serious pregnancy problem that can increase your risk of:
·         Early delivery
·         Having a baby with a low birth weight
·         Seizures
·         Stroke

Mild cases of high blood pressure may not need any treatment. If you have very high blood pressure your doctor may recommend medication, hospitalization and/or using medicine to start labour to deliver your baby (induction of labour).
