Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)

Many women Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes or high blood sugar that starts, or is first diagnosed, during pregnancy.  A simple blood test is used to test you for GDM. Treatment for GDM is available.

Women at a higher risk of getting GDM are:
·         Older than 35
·         Overweight
·         Have a family history of diabetes
·         Are of Aboriginal or Asian ancestry

Gestational diabetes increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. If you have had GDM in one pregnancy, you are at risk of having in other pregnancies.  GDM also increases the risk that your baby will have high birth weight and will be born with low blood sugar. Good blood sugar control reduces the risk of these complications. Regular check-ups are important to find and treat problems early.
