Shaken Baby Syndrome

The Joint Statement on Shaken Baby Syndrome

The Joint Statement on Shaken Baby Syndrome was released in 2001 by Health Canada and was co-signed by: Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Canadian Institute of Child Health, Canadian Paediatric Society, Canadian Public Health Association, Child Welfare League of Canada, The Canadian Bar Association, and the Saskatchewan Institute on Prevention of Handicaps.

The Joint Statement on Shaken Baby Syndrome was developed: 1) to create a common understanding based on current evidence, of its definition, cause, outcomes and consequences for the family and community; 2) to stimulate the development of effective ongoing local and national prevention strategies; and 3) to encourage the provision of support for affected children and families.

Multidisciplinary Guidelines on the Identification, Investigation and Management of Suspected Shaken Baby Syndrome

The Multidisciplinary Guidelines on the Identification, Investigation and Management of Suspected Shaken Baby Syndrome are being prepared to assist in developing local protocols for handling cases of shaken baby syndrome. The Guidelines will assist professionals in taking the appropriate course of action following the suspicion of a case of shaken baby syndrome. The Guidelines are intended to be generic enough that large or small communities can use them to assist in their specific circumstances.

The intent of these Guidelines is not to provide instruction to the various disciplines regarding how to conduct their roles in a case of shaken baby syndrome, but rather how the various disciplines can best work together.

The Child Maltreatment Section of the Canadian Paediatric Society has taken on the task of revising the Guidelines and preparing them for publication.
