Home Safety

Injuries in the home are caused by two things: unsafe actions and unsafe conditions. The danger of injuries is greatest:

  • When caregivers are not paying attention; small children need constant supervision.
  • When children learn a new skill unexpectedly; like rolling over, crawling or climbing.
  • When the children are tired.
  • When the environment is unfamiliar.

Every child will experience bumps and bruises; it is a part of growing up. An increased awareness of the potential hazards in the home that could cause serious injury will keep parents alerted to possible dangers until their children are old enough to make safe decisions on their own.
