Goals and Objectives

The first goal is to bring about improvements in the sexual and reproductive health of citizens of all ages, and particularly, adolescents and young adults in the province. These improvements will be reflected in the following objectives:

  • increased public recognition and acceptance of the importance of sexual and reproductive health to overall health and wellness
  • increased accessibility to programs and services which enable people to make healthy choices and informed decisions in matters of personal sexual and reproductive health
  • significant reductions in unintended pregnancies, abortions and sexually transmitted diseases, and in the complications and consequences of these events, such as decreased quality of life and costs incurred by individuals, families, communities and the health system

The second goal is to involve families, schools, community members, community groups and organizations, and all levels of government in sharing responsibility for promoting sexual and reproductive health and wellness among all age groups. This shared responsibility will be reflected in the following objectives:

  • open and responsible communication about positive aspects of human sexuality through education of parents and caregivers, family life education, sexual health education in schools, and effective use of health services
  • increased community support for promotion of responsible sexual behavior at all ages
  • increased community support for postponement of sexual involvement as a realistic option in decision-making
